I think everyone has heard of coconut oil once in its life. Good for food, for body, hair, this oil is truly a Holy Grail for clean beauty. I’ve been using coconut oil for years, and now it’s time to tell you for what I use it in more details. Everyone does what he/she wants with or without coconut oil but here is what I do
I like to apply a generous layer of coconut oil on my hair as a mask, a couple of hours before shower time or just 10 minutes before if I don’t got the time. I got dry, curly/frizzy hair so coconut oil is a true friend. I like to this mask once a week and honestly, my hair look so beautiful after that. They look healthy, strong, perfectly structured, don’t frizz. Well, a real friend since years
BODY & FACE
You are looking for a makeup remover that is clean, organic and super efficient ? Just use coconut oil. This is what I usually do when I don’t have any makeup remover. The only thing that I don’t like when you use coconut oil as a makeup remover is that you can’t rinse the oil off like regular cleansing oils or balms. You need to wipe it off with a cloth or a coton round. This is the only disadvantage of coconut oil as makeup remover.
Coconut oil is one of the best moisturizer that I ever used on my body. It’s so hydrating and nourishing. So far, I never found something better. It’s clean, organic and non toxic for the skin. Right after the shower when the skin is still wet, the oil is applied so easily. Ten minutes later, my skin soaked it like a sponge with water. The best defense during cold winters, hot summers, after sun care…
An amazing moisturizer for you body but also a true friend when it comes to shaving. I don’t use shaving products like foams or anything else. I used to just apply shower gel before shaving but it wasn’t enough. Now, when I shave, I apply coconut oil on dry skin before shaving and start to shave right after. The oil coats the skin, the razor slides easily and cuts hair without harassing the skin. When you are done, just take your regular shower and that’s it. For an extra moisture, just apply another layer of coconut oil on wet skin after. Soft and beautiful skin 100% guarantee !
I always got coconut oil with me. If I’m travelling, I always carry some oil with me, just in case. When I need to restock it, I always go in an organic store and pick a jar of unscented coconut oil (clean steaming process will remove the fragrance/scent). I just find it in the cooking section for 5 or 6€. Cheap as F but efficient as hell ! Coconut oil is truly a multipurpose holy grail that everyone needs. However, I got one thought : coconut oil is on the trend and is sold mostly in organic stores (well in France, I don’t know about other countries) but if it’s so trendy, what about environment ? Is there sufficient coconut trees to provide oil for everyone on this Earth or because of the need there will be environmental damages, like over-agriculture/farming of coconut trees ? I’m afraid that the demand will overpass supply and this will create a natural disaster… Well, if anyone has the answer to this, I would love to know about it. Beyond this thought, coconut oil is truly amazing for anything ✨
You know in France we use to wish “Happy New Year” during the entire month of January when you meet people for the first time. HAPPY NEW YEAR GUYS !
I hope you had great holidays (and if you didn’t got holidays, just thank you for working during this time, it’s always harder than during another moment of the year).
I think it’s time to sum up the year 2018 and establish some goals for 2019.
What I’ve accomplished this year ? I move out twice, started my thesis as a PhD Candidate in Anthropology, got a new job, eaten less junk food, discovered new cities and a new region in France, I made new friends (but lost some old ones – not dead don’t worry), got more self-confidence, got closer to my family… Well, even if there was some bad moments, 2018 was actually a good year. I didn’t traveled outside France but that’s ok. I will travel again this year (finger crossed). I didn’t achieved all the goals that I wanted for 2018 but I made a lot of progress. To see what I achieved this year regarding my goals, check this post 2018 Resolutions
What about 2019 ? My goals are
Surfing for the first time in the ocean this Summer
Going back on fieldwork for the thesis in Senegal
Transitioning to clean, non-toxic and not tested on animals beauty
Eating less meat and fish and more veggies and fruits
Succeeding during this first year of thesis
Reading more personal books (not only books for the thesis)
Posting on IG and this blog constantly
Finding a good sleep (not waking up at noon when I don’t work)
Happy November guys ! Great news : the entire Harry Potter saga is now available on Netflix. This means one thing : a Harry Potter marathon ! Brace yourselves !
More seriously, let’s talk about beauty. During this October month, I’ve ended a lot of skincare/haircare/bodycare and makeup items. Some of these were newbies and others were a restock because I love them so much.
Maybelline Master Strobing Stick • The best drugstore highlighter that I ever tried (also my first highlighter). So creamy, it gives the shine you need without being sparkly. Applied on high points of your face (cheeks, tip of the nose, cupid’s bow), it provides a glossy effect. Really cheap, it lasts a lot. I was actually sad when I finished it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Maybelline Master Brow Pencil • Another Maybelline from the Master collection. Got it in emergency because I couldn’t take an ABH one. The color is a perfect match, not too orangy or red. A lovely ashy-brown that fits girls with brown to blond hair. About the pencil : it has a little brush and it’s pretty convenient to blend the product in your brows. However, after one use (for your two brows), you need to sharpen the pencil. And if, like me, you do your eyebrows everyday, the pencil lasts for 3 weeks only. Okay it’s cheap, but the formula is so creamy that you need a lot of product to get a good result. The Brow Wiz from ABH is pricier and contains less product but it last a lot comparing to this drugstore option. I’m not sure I will repurchase it (unless it’s an emergency) ⭐️
Becca Cosmetics Highlighter (shade Gold Pop) • Gifted by my cousin last year, I used it as highlighter AND eye shadow. That was so good. Really high pigment, ultra-concentrate. I understand why it’s so famous. I finished it under bad circumstances. When I moved out last summer, I dropped the container and the pressed powder broke. That wasn’t that bad. However, it fall again two weeks ago (right after finishing the Maybelline Highlighter) and that was too late. I couldn’t save it ! This is the reason why I’m not going to repurchase it. Powder highlighters are too fragile for me. I like to carry my highlighter with me throughout the day so the stick formula is better. But just because of this, it doesn’t mean that it’s a bad highlighter at all. I truly think that it’s one the best (or maybe) the best powder-highlighter in the market. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Kiehl’s Smoothing Oil Infused Conditioner • I already did a review on it last month and said how much I love it. I actually love it so much that I bought the big container. I think once you like the travel size, it’s better to get a big one. It’s finally cheaper and really helpful. Just keep the travel size just in case your going on weekend or vacation. It’s definitely my favorite conditioner. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Weleda Rosehip Oil • An organic Rosehip oil for your face and body. It started to get cold a week ago in France and my skin started to “crocodile”. I usually tended to use this oil only for my face but regarding the weather, I started to pamper my body with this oil after a hot shower at night. It really helped to restore the skin and balance it. I was less “crocodile” and sensitive. When you are a person of color, your skin tends to be ashier than the pale ones. You need to moisturize a lot and that’s a thing that I don’t do a lot (only because I’m lazy). And about a week of bodycare, my skin thanked me. I’m sad that I finished this oil because it’s amazing : moisturizing, pampering, organic and protecting. But a 100mL containers is too small for a daily use (for body). I will repurchase it, but not for now. I’m going to buy a body lotion with a 400mL capacity (a Topicrem or Biotherm Body Lotion, still thinking). But regarding this oil, it’s amazing. As efficient as the Rosehip Oil from Pai, cheaper, for face & body and smells better. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
& Other Stories Sicilian Sunrise Body Scrub • My favorite body scrubs are from this brand. I started to use them three years ago and I’m still loving them. I think the Sicilian Sunrise has the best fragrance (for me), because it’s just lemons and warmth of the wood. I actually would like to get more from the Sicilian Sunrise collection. Plus, if you got an & Other Stories store in your city and you bring back an empty container, you got 10% off on your next purchase. Last year, I took a pair of heels for 100€ and brought back my empty body scrub and got 10€ of discount. I was so happy. When I’ll restock a body scrub, I will pick this one again (same fragrance from the same collection). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Farmacy Beauty Green Clean Cleansing Balm • The best cleansing balm / makeup removing balm that I ever tried. Better than the Clinique TTDO ! My favorite. Plus, it has a clean composition. Just a little bit and massage the mixture onto dry skin, remove it with a hot and damp cloth or rinse it with warm water. Under 90mL, it’s TSA approved ! It removes ALL the makeup gently (mascara, eyeliner, waterproof etc). Just the best cleansing balm ever ! I will restock it as soon as I finish my current makeup remover (a cleansing milk from REN) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser • I said it a hundred times, it’s one of my favorite cleanser (maybe just my favorite). However, I think I won’t restock it. I looked deeply on the composition and has a lot of controversial ingredients (mostly several parabens). It’s sad because it was my favorite. ⭐️
The Bioderma Hydrabio Micellar Water Mini • If you are traveling and looking for a micellar water to remove your makeup. This is the one ! Better than the Sensibio (Créaline in France), this micellar water is more gentle and doesn’t irritate the eye area. My favorite micellar water in the market. I always come back to it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Caudalie Grape Water • Like the Avène or LRP spritz, this one soothes your skin. Perfect to refresh, hydrate and sooth the skin, this spritz is probably better than the Avène one. Pricier but with better ingredients & cruelty free. A good one ! It’s always good to have a spritz with you. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Melvita Rose Water Spray Mini • Organic Rose Water in a travel size. Perfect for weekends. The Melvita Rose Water is my favorite floral water. I also love the Sanoflore one that I always purchase because it’s so easy to find it in every pharmacy. But I honestly prefer this one, because I think it’s more efficient to my skin. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Farmacy Honey Potion Mask • The most nourishing and soothing mask ! Honey-based, this warming mask is so good. I use to not like it at the beginning because of the warming effect and but now I think it’s one of the most efficient mask. Clean composition. Right after using it, your skin can face anything. The skin is nourished, hydrated, soothed and strong. I will restock it ! I think I just love Farmacy ! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Fresh Rose Face Mask • The number one of hydration ! My favorite face mask. My second pot this year. I will purchase the full size ASAP. The love of my life ! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Caudalie Vinopure Serum • From the fresh born collection of Caudalie, the Vinopure is for acne prone, oily to combination skin that are struggling of impurities and flaws. I started to use it twice a day but because it was too drying for my skin, I only used it at night. It really cleared my skin : less acne scars, a brighter skin, invisible pores. Such a good product. I haven’t tried other products from the same collection but I think that Caudalie did a great job here. I will not restock this serum for the winter because it’s too drying for me (I got normal to combination & dehydrated skin-type) but next summer, you can be sure it will be part of my shelf. So far, the best skincare acne treatment that I tried. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Weleda Skin Food • The legendary skin food that is multipurposes. For your body, hands and face, this tube needs to be in your shelf if you don’t have it. It’s just food for your skin ! I always got a tube in my pharmacy even if I don’t use it everyday. You need to get one ! So thick and nourishing, it’s a life saver, especially when Winter is coming (but still no Jon Snow here) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré • Do I really need to tell you how much I love it ! It’s probably the fifth or sixth tube that I got since 2018 ! My favorite moisturizer of all the time. The composition of this moisturizer isn’t the best (mineral oil and other bad ingredients), that’s why I’m trying too use different moisturizers (cleaner ones) but if I don’t find something as good as this guy, I will go back to it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
That’s it for October empties. I hope I’ll finish less items during November. I’m collecting all the empties since January 2018 and it’s really a big collection. It made me think about consumption and what I really need. Being a skincare blogger makes you wanna try everything and I think this is not the best thing for you and the planet. Of course, you guys want to have reviews on new stuff but sometimes, if you already got a holy grail, just keep it (unless you wanna change the way you consume products – like me, I’m currently transitioning to clean/green/non-toxic/cruelty free beauty). I wish you a good November.
With seasons, I feel like my skin requires different levels of moisture and hydration. It has been pretty hot in France during October. It actually started to get colder today. And according to the Weather, the temperatures are going to be under 20°C everyday (sometimes less than 15°C). Colder than the 30°C October month, finally ! And I’m glad that it’s getting colder. This means that sweater are now in. It’s not too cold to stay outside and not too hot. Like spring, the weather and temperatures are enjoyable. However, regarding skincare and body care, there is a need of adaptation. In Bordeaux, the weather is pretty windy and it tends to dry my skin (I got crocodile legs since a couple of days haha). During the morning, I try to not dry too much my skin (I don’t cleanse with a regular cleanser anymore and just go to the moisturizing part). For the evening, it’s the same thing. I’m more gentle and try to hydrate and nourish even more. This is what I usually do :
Step 1. Makeup Removing. I use a cleansing milk
Step 2. Cleanser. I use a gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip my skin
Step 3. Exfoliation. [just once or twice a week]. I use a Caudalie Exfoliator that leaves the skin pure but not dry at all
Step 4. Masking. I finished all my nourishing or hydrating mask so I just use pink clay (hydrating and purifying) with warm water
Step 5. Serum. Since now, I used the Vinopure serum but it’s too drying and almost empty. I’m gonna replace it with the Vinoperfect (both are from Caudalie) when I’ll have money for it. Until then, I’ll just skip that step.
Step 6. Face Oil. I like to use Rosehip Oil* or Apricot Oil. Good for skin texture, hydrating and give radiance, both are good. The Apricot Oil is fast absorbing (good for combination skin type) and allows to continue the skincare routine
Step 7. Eye Cream [two or three times a week]. I apply a thick layer of nourishing eye cream the restore the balance of eye area (after wearing eye-shadow, mascara and removing it – the eye area is pretty dry). I’m currently using the Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado. I live the mask on for 30 minutes and gently pat what’s left. It’s pretty nourishing but this Kiehl’s eye cream contains a lot of controversial ingredients, that’s why if you are on clean or non-toxic beauty, I won’t recommend it. I actually like it but won’t repurchase it because of toxic ingredients.
Step 8. Moisturizer. I usually use the same moisturizer as used during the morning routine.
Step 9. Lip Balm
I also drink a lot of water and have an infusion with Camomille
* I use the Rosehip Oil from Weleda that is originally a body oil. It can be use as a face oil too without clogging pores. I like to apply the oil on my body right after the shower when my skin is damp. My body skin need to be moisturized a lot (thank to my African origins, if I don’t apply moisturizer frequently [every day would be perfect] my skin cracks and looks like crocodile one) but I always forgot to apply any moisturizer on. I try to apply a layer on body at least once a week… Like Paloma Elsesser says “When you grow up as a person of color, like me, you get out the shower and put lotion on, always ! You don’t wanna look ashy…” Well, I’m going to do my best to put lotion or body oil more often. Because my skin needs it !
As much as I love makeup and beauty products, I decided this week to slowlymoving to clean beauty. I recently started to look deeper regarding what’s in my moisturizer and other stuff. You might know that my holy grail is the Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré. Gosh I love this stuff so much. But the other day, I read an article on a french beauty website that explained in details what are the products and their benefits to health and skin. I was so choked to see how much bad chemicals are present in a single tube. I knew that there was mineral oil and I tend to accept that. What I don’t accept is the fact that there are more bad chemicals than good products in it. The tube says that it contains beeswax, oils… But IRL, there are mostly bad chemicals. It just reminds me that moment in Confessions of a Shopaholic when she discovers that there is almost no cashmere in the sweater and just acrylic (or just 2% of cashmere). Such a disappointment !
And now I’m here, standing right behind my computer writing this post. I think this is my 2019 number 1 resolution : moving to clean beauty. Organic, the most natural as possible, without mineral oils and other bad friends, cruelty free (not from animal extraction and not tested on animals) ! I’m not vegan or vegetarian, I’m still eating meat (but local meat ! not from Argentina or anything like that – only meat from South West of France, because this is where I live) and using leather, but regarding what I put on my skin, I consider that nature can provide what I really need instead of pretending that this kind of oil (horse oil ?! really WTF ? – I received an email from a Korean Brand that offered me to send skincare products based on horse oil – and not like castor oil that is not based on beavers, horse oil is extracted directly after the death of the horse, right in the stomach disgusting ! – that was the first alert regarding skincare) might be good. Because I don’t wanna waste my current skincare items, I’m gonna finish them and replace them with clean ones. The transition is going to be a little rough at the beginning because it requires a little bit of research : ingredients, where it comes from (because organic from Europe is not the same organic than in Asia or any part of the world – regarding laws and restrictions). Clean beauty (big brands) is also more pricy $$$ If I can pick glass bottles or recycled plastics ones, it’s better. For french here, Avril is an organic brand that provides skincare & makeup items for nothing. Really cheap, it doesn’t mean that there is no quality. A friend of mine just swear by these since two years.
Regarding makeup, this is going to be more difficult to do that transition. First because I love “luxurious” brands like Chanel, Dior and so on. And also because a makeup item lasts for months. I will do the transition for makeup but later, once that I completely changed my skincare routine.
If you guys have any recommendation or suggestion, feel free 🍃
